Grab Bar Installation Done Right
Grab bars are small, but where and how they go up matters a lot.
A grab bar has to be mounted to solid support to do its job. A towel bar or a suction cup bar is not made to hold your weight. That is why grab bar installation belongs with a trained installer.
Your designer watches how you move in the bathroom. Then bars go where your hands reach as you step in, sit, stand and step out. These are the usual spots:

What is a handicap shower?
It is a shower built for someone who has trouble stepping, standing or keeping their balance. Most have a low or zero threshold, a built-in seat and grab bars. We usually call it an accessible shower, but it is the same idea.
What is the difference between a roll in shower and a low threshold shower?
A low threshold shower has a small curb you step over. A roll in shower has no curb, so a wheelchair can roll in. Your designer checks your floor and drain to see which one fits.
Can you add grab bars to my current shower?
In many cases, yes. Each bar needs solid support behind the wall, and your installer confirms that first. Grab bars can also be planned into a new shower from the start.
Can I keep my bathtub and still make it safer?
A step-thru insert cuts a low opening into your existing tub and turns it into a walk-in shower. If you still want baths, a walk-in tub with a water-sealed door is the better fit.
Is an accessible shower only for seniors?
No. Anyone who finds a tub wall hard to step over can use one. That includes people with limited mobility at any age, and families who want to plan ahead.
